In the late 1970's and early 80's snowboard competitions began to spring up across the country in places like Michigan and Utah and then spread to all elite athletes winter areas. Over time, the rules became codified and snowboards used had to meet certain design criteria for the competition because they still had a wide variety of types that is experienced. Initially, non-traditional skiers as the presence of tables snowboarding on the slopes. The pilots were often poorly versed in the etiquette of skiing, and accidents were not uncommon.
