Book Review: The Illustrated Guide to Snowboarding
Kevin Ryan Illustrated Guide to Snowboarding offers one of the most useful guides snowboarding for people of any level, whether beginners wanting to learn more about the sport and get their techniques sharpened, up to instructors and professionals looking to advance their skills on the slopes.
Reader Reviews and Comments about this book has proved it has plenty of useful exercises features that helped them improve their game immensely after repeated practice. The exercises are written in a step by step fashion that seems ambiguous at first, but makes perfect sense once you really try. Furthermore, coverage of the book is all encompassing, including tips for beginning, to intermediate, advanced levels.
The approach taken by the author is both humorous and scientific, employing small drawn illustrations to show the exercises and techniques. While there are some images real concerned, these are hand-drawn illustrations fun to watch and yet maintain a good degree of accuracy in portraying the skills and techniques shown. The author uses a lot of jokes and banter interspersed with facts and illustrations are also a mix of the serious, factual and cute, cartoon representations things snowboarding.
Most professional instructors in snowboarding who read this book found new drills and skills they can teach their classes within the beginner sections, so that the cover of this book is quite extensive. Moreover, the author knows that certain skills can only be transmitted when the practice and demonstration by what comes out of their way to state when certain skills are best acquired through a snowboard instructor.
One of the sections that many readers probably be useful is the chapter on the care and maintenance of snowboarding. Where most how-to books devote footnotes or at best, a few pages care and maintenance of equipment, Kevin Ryan actually goes out of his way to write a whole chapter in-depth tips for taking proper care of your table snowboard.
There is even a section on the ergonomics of skateboarding, covering the proper way to carry and set up a board to minimize stress physical snowboarding. This also includes explanations of the physics and mechanics of snowboarding. While not exactly necessary for most people, This chapter is useful for people who are more technically inclined, for example, industrial designers that might be to design a new type of snowboard.
Unlike some school books, this book does not replace the need for an instructor, but seeks to increase and broaden the knowledge gained work with good qualified snowboarding instructor. For those who insist on learning everything from a book and do it themselves, however, the focus of the book to extensive details and explanations of the mechanics of snowboarding are actually enough to let them pass and teach themselves through practice and repetition.
This book is 336 pages and is the first edition was published in the renowned book company McGraw-Hill in 1998. Although published eight years ago, to date has being one of the most popular and sought after instructional books for snowboarders. No matter what your skill level, is a guarantee that you will benefit Reading this book is already considered a classic of "free" in the sport by avid snowboarding enthusiasts.
